NAMIC State Legislator of the Year Award

NAMIC Presents State Legislator of Year Award to Michigan Legislator

State Legislator of the Year NAMIC announced in September that its State Legislator of the Year award for 2012 would go to Rep. Paul Opsommer, R-Mich., for his support of free-market principles and taking strong positions to improve the insurance market in his state. The award was presented to Opsommer at a luncheon held in his honor Nov. 28 in Lansing, Mich.. Jim Wilds of Frankenmuth Mutual, who serves on the NAMIC Board of Directors, presented the award.

Opsommer was the lead sponsor of the legislative package that established the National Conference of Insurance Legislators’ model on credit-based insurance scoring. “After an unnecessary decade-long battle over this underwriting tool, this measure improves the insurance market significantly in Michigan, and consumers will benefit from this law,” said Neil Alldredge, NAMIC’s senior vice president of state and policy affairs. “Representative Opsommer shepherded the package through the legislative process and worked with the insurance industry to ensure all relevant and required amendments were included in the final bill.”

Opsommer, a former mayor and city councilman, was elected to a third term in the state House of Representatives in 2010. He was appointed as associate speaker pro tempore for his last term. He is also chair of the House Transportation Committee and sits on the Insurance Committee, Regulatory Reform Committee, Energy and Technology Committee, and Health Policy Committee.
