NAMIC Honors Smith With Chairman’s Award, Salutes Service to Insurance Industry

The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies presented its Chairman’s Award to John Smith, president and CEO of Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company, at the association’s 124th Annual Convention today in National Harbor, Maryland.

“Throughout his lifelong insurance career, John Smith has been an exemplary leader,” said Charles M. Chamness, president and CEO of NAMIC. “John is someone who gets things done, and he has personally been responsible for bold leadership in the industry, at NAMIC, and in charitable endeavors at the local and national level.  NAMIC is proud to recognize him with the 2019 Chairman’s Award as a testament to the accomplishments and outstanding service he brings to our great industry.”

Smith joined PLM as vice president of underwriting in 1998 and was appointed president and CEO in 2003. Under his leadership, PLM has grown from a tertiary, regional player to a market leader in the niche of wood-related insurance.

“I am indeed humbled by this recognition, which comes at the recommendation of my peers and the NAMIC Board,” Smith said. “My commitment and dedication to the mutual industry and to NAMIC have been rewarding and enjoyable while also assisting me in improving my ability to lead our organization and enhance our ability to service our insureds, brokers, employees, and the wood industry as a whole.”

A graduate of Rider University, Smith majored in accounting and earned a Bachelor of Science in commerce. He completed his graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated with an MBA. Smith is a strong believer in the value of continuing education and has obtained several professional designations, including Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Certified Insurance Counselor, and Certified Risk Manager. He is currently working on his Associate in Reinsurance.

Smith is active in the insurance and wood-related industries and has served on several boards of directors. He speaks regularly to wood industry groups on enterprise risk management, leadership, and insurance-related topics.
