Background
NAMIC is the largest property/casualty insurance trade association in the country, serving regional and local mutual insurance companies on main streets across America as well as many of the country’s largest national insurers.
NAMIC’s nearly 1,500 member companies write more than $391 billion in annual premiums, accounting for 68 percent of the homeowners insurance market, 56 percent of the automobile market and 31 percent of the business insurance market.
Through its advocacy programs NAMIC promotes public policy solutions that benefit member companies and the policyholders they serve and fosters greater understanding and recognition of the unique alignment of interests between management and policyholders of mutual companies.
The first meeting of this national association dates back to 1896 when mutual insurance executives from multiple states gathered in Chicago to discuss formation of a national group.
NAMIC membership is not restricted to mutual insurance companies. Stock insurance companies, reinsurance companies, and industry vendors may apply as associate members, but only mutual insurer representatives can serve on its board and committees.
More than 450,000 people are employed by NAMIC member companies.
Incorporated in Indiana in 1920, NAMIC is headquartered in Indianapolis and maintains an office in Washington, D.C., along with state representatives throughout the country.
